Read More About Our Specialties
If you lie awake at night unable to quiet your mind, or wake in the early hours unable to get back to sleep, you are not alone. Insomnia is one of the most common sleep disorders in the United States — and for people living with anxiety or OCD, it can feel nearly impossible to break the cycle. At Anxiety & OCD Specialists in Tampa, FL, we provide evidence-based insomnia treatment using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), the gold-standard, non-medication approach recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. We treat children, teens, and adults, with both in-person and virtual sessions available throughout Florida and virtual sessions in New York.
In-person sessions are provided in Tampa and virtual sessions are available throughout Florida and New York.
What Is Insomnia?
Insomnia is a sleep disorder characterized by persistent difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early even when adequate time and opportunity for sleep exist. Unlike an occasional restless night, insomnia causes meaningful daytime impairment: fatigue, mood changes, difficulty concentrating, irritability, or declining performance at school or work.
Research estimates that approximately 30% of adults experience symptoms of insomnia, and roughly 10% meet criteria for a diagnosable chronic insomnia disorder. Children and adolescents are also significantly affected, with studies suggesting 20-30% of children have sleep difficulties.
Insomnia is typically classified into two types:
- Acute Insomnia: Short-term sleep disruption lasting days to a few weeks, often triggered by stress, illness, or a life change.
- Chronic Insomnia: Sleep difficulties occurring at least three nights per week for three months or longer, often requiring professional treatment.
Signs and Symptoms of Insomnia
Insomnia looks different from person to person. Common symptoms include:
- Difficulty falling asleep even when tired
- Waking up frequently throughout the night
- Waking too early and being unable to fall back asleep
- Sleep that feels unrefreshing or non-restorative
- Daytime fatigue or low energy
- Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions
- Mood changes such as irritability, anxiety, or low mood
- Increased errors or accidents during the day
- Ongoing worry or anxiety specifically about sleep
This last symptom anxiety about sleep itself is particularly common and is one reason insomnia so often overlaps with anxiety disorders. The fear of not sleeping can become its own source of hyperarousal, keeping the brain in an activated state that makes sleep even harder to achieve.
What Causes Insomnia?
Insomnia rarely has a single cause. Most often it develops from a combination of psychological, behavioral, and physiological factors. Common contributors include:
- Anxiety disorders including generalized anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety, and health anxiety
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) intrusive thoughts and nighttime rituals can severely disrupt sleep onset
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) hypervigilance and nightmares interfere with the sleep-wake cycle
- Depression both insomnia and hypersomnia are hallmark symptoms of depressive disorders
- Stress work pressure, relationship difficulties, financial concerns, and major life changes
At Anxiety & OCD Specialists, we recognize that for many of our clients, insomnia is closely tied to anxiety and OCD. Treating the sleep disorder alone often isn’t enough which is why our integrated approach addresses both the sleep difficulty and the underlying mental health factors driving it.
The Anxiety-Insomnia-OCD Connection
Anxiety, OCD, and insomnia share a powerful, bidirectional relationship each one can worsen the others. Understanding this connection is central to effective treatment.
How Anxiety Fuels Insomnia
Anxiety activates the body's "fight-or-flight" stress response. At night, when the environment becomes quiet and distractions disappear, anxious thoughts can flood the mind. Racing thoughts, worry spirals, and physical tension keep the nervous system in a state of hyperarousal the opposite of what the brain needs to transition into sleep. Over time, the bed itself can become associated with wakefulness and worry, reinforcing the cycle.
How OCD Disrupts Sleep
For individuals with OCD, nighttime can be especially difficult. The quiet of bedtime often amplifies intrusive thoughts and obsessions. Some people engage in mental or physical compulsions checking, reassurance-seeking, reviewing, or neutralizing that delay sleep onset by hours. OCD-related insomnia is often missed or misdiagnosed, making specialized care from an OCD-trained therapist essential.
The Sleep Deprivation Feedback Loop
Poor sleep also worsens anxiety and OCD symptoms. Sleep deprivation reduces the brain's capacity to regulate emotion, lowers distress tolerance, and heightens sensitivity to perceived threats creating a vicious cycle. Breaking this loop requires addressing both sleep and the underlying condition simultaneously, which is exactly what our therapists are trained to do.
How Is Insomnia Treated?
Insomnia can be treated with medication, behavioral therapy, or a combination of both. While sleep medications can provide short-term relief, they do not address the underlying behaviors and thoughts that perpetuate insomnia and many carry risks of dependence or rebound insomnia when discontinued.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the American College of Physicians, and the American Psychological Association all recommend Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) as the first-line treatment for chronic insomnia. CBT-I is more effective than medication in the long term, with benefits that continue to improve after treatment ends.
What Is CBT-I? (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia)
CBT-I is a structured, evidence-based therapy that targets the thoughts, behaviors, and physiological patterns that maintain chronic insomnia. Unlike sleep hygiene tips alone, CBT-I is a multi-component intervention delivered by a trained therapist over several sessions. It is effective even for people who have struggled with insomnia for years.

Frequently Asked Questions About Insomnia
How long does it take for CBT-I to work?
Most people begin to notice improvement within 1 to 2 weeks. CBT-I is designed to be a short-term treatment, typically 6 to 8 sessions. Unlike medication, the benefits of CBT-I continue to improve after treatment ends rather than reverting once therapy is stopped.
Is CBT-I better than sleep medication?
Research consistently shows that CBT-I produces better long-term outcomes than sleep medication for chronic insomnia. CBT-I addresses the root behavioral and cognitive patterns that perpetuate insomnia, while medications only manage symptoms. The American College of Physicians recommends CBT-I as the first-line treatment before medication is considered.
Can children and teenagers do CBT-I?
Yes. CBT-I is effective and safe for children and adolescents, with protocols adapted for different developmental stages. For younger children, parents are often involved as coaches to implement the strategies at home. We work with all ages at Anxiety & OCD Specialists.
My insomnia is caused by anxiety. Should I treat the anxiety or the sleep first?
Both, simultaneously. When insomnia and anxiety co-occur, treating each in isolation is less effective. Our integrated approach addresses anxiety and insomnia together, which produces faster and more durable results than treating one condition at a time.
Can I get help for insomnia if I'm not in Tampa?
Both, simultaneously. When insomnia and anxiety co-occur, treating each in isolation is less effective. Our integrated approach addresses anxiety and insomnia together, which produces faster and more durable results than treating one condition at a time.
Do you accept insurance?
We are currently in-network with UMR Top Tier (for Mount Sinai employees and dependents). For other insurers, we are an out-of-network provider and can supply documentation to support OON claims. Please contact us to discuss your options.
What is the difference between insomnia and just 'bad sleep'?
Everyone has an occasional bad night of sleep. Insomnia is defined by persistent sleep difficulty occurring at least three nights per week, lasting at least three months, and causing meaningful daytime impairment. If sleep problems are affecting your mood, focus, work, or relationships, it is worth seeking professional support.
Can insomnia be cured completely?
Many people achieve complete remission from chronic insomnia with CBT-I. Others experience dramatic improvement that allows them to function well and manage occasional disruptions independently. CBT-I provides skills that last a lifetime, reducing the likelihood of relapse.

A review for Natalie Noel: hi everyone, I was dealing with severe anxiety for a long time, to the point where I felt completely hopeless. I had intense anticipatory anxiety and could not sleep before any event at all. The insomnia was debilitating and affected every part of my life. I was also carrying severe trauma and PTSD, and I truly felt like I would never be normal again. I tried everything — therapy, EMDR, neurofeedback, and so many other approaches — but nothing fully helped. After doing my own research, I found Natalie Neol and decided to reach out. From the very beginning, Natalie was incredibly insightful and compassionate. After only three sessions, she recognized that I was suffering from severe anxiety and OCD, and she immediately referred me to two excellent doctors for medication support. I scheduled an appointment with one of them, started treatment, and within a month my life has completely changed. I honestly cannot believe how different I feel. For the first time in years, I feel like I am truly living again. Just last week, I had a major presentation — something that would normally have caused overwhelming panic — and I walked in calm, confident, and did amazingly with no anxiety at all. I still can’t believe it. Natalie, God bless you. You are an absolute godsend. I truly owe you my life.Posted on Nate AshbyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Natalie is the OCD specialist to see around Tampa! She is patient and willing to talk through things as many times as it takes. No case too tough for Natalie. Highly recommend.Posted on Alayna MannTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. This center is great and extremely welcoming! I looked forward to meeting with Natalie and she helped me learn more about myself every session. She also helped redirect negative thought patterns and behaviors and taught me how to handle my thoughts better.Posted on Judy SpigarelliTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Mario Juster-Kruse truly understands my anxiety. Mario's guidance lets me unmask and speak my truth. After just a couple sessions, I felt noticeable positive changes. 30 years of talk therapy didn't get me to the results I need, but Mario's approach has me on the right path. Truly grateful!Posted on Jessica RoseTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have been a client of Mario’s for almost a year after having some unexpected, tragic losses as well as coming out of a terrible marriage and being a Covid ER nurse. I’ve always been an anxious person but, after these events, it had become unbearable, and I lost who I was. Things got worse before they got better and the depression was eating at my soul. I feel extremely fortunate to have had Mario as my therapist. He has helped me rebuild myself one broken stick at a time and I’ve started reclaiming control of my life. I’ve had other therapists in the past for various things, but he has been the best I’ve had. I genuinely do not think I would have survived this past year if I had a different therapist and I am extremely grateful for all that he has done to help me. I highly recommend him for anyone seeking treatment.Posted on Anja AlpendreTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We are incredibly grateful for the care and support our child received from Nona Zamora. She is truly exceptional - kind, compassionate, and deeply knowledgeable. From the very first visit, she created a safe, trusting environment and took the time to truly understand our child’s needs. We felt heard, supported, and confident that our child was in the best possible hands. We were so lucky to be in her care and would wholeheartedly recommend her to any family looking for a thoughtful, skilled, and compassionate psychologist.
