Excoriation (Skin-Picking)
Excoriation is an OCD-related disorder and is part of the body focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs). This disorder involves the repeated behavior of picking skin or scabs that can result in severe lesions and leaving one feeling like the behavior is out of their control. The disorder causes significant distress and hinders functionality. Severe cases require medical treatment due to infections and general wound care.
There are often several approaches used at one time for excoriation. Some of the evidence-based treatment modalities include: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Habit Reversal Training (HRT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Comprehensive Behavioral Therapy (ComB). There is some overlap within these therapeutic approaches.
