ERP Therapy
What is ERP therapy for OCD and anxiety?
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is an evidence-based therapy that helps people face fears while resisting compulsions and avoidance. Over time, this reduces anxiety and improves control over OCD and anxiety symptoms.
What conditions can ERP therapy treat?
ERP is primarily used for OCD and is also effective for anxiety disorders, including phobias, panic disorder, health anxiety, social anxiety, and generalized anxiety disorder.
Is ERP therapy the most effective treatment for OCD?
Yes. ERP is considered the gold standard treatment for OCD and has strong research support for reducing symptoms and improving long-term outcomes.
What happens during ERP therapy sessions?
ERP sessions involve identifying triggers, practicing gradual exposures, and learning to resist compulsions. Treatment is structured, collaborative, and tailored to your pace.
Will ERP therapy force me to face fears too quickly?
No. ERP is gradual and collaborative. Your therapist works with you to ensure exposures feel manageable and appropriate for your readiness.
How effective is ERP therapy for OCD and anxiety?
ERP is highly effective. Many people experience significant symptom improvement, especially with consistent participation and practice.
How long does ERP therapy usually take?
Many clients see improvement within 8–16 weeks, though treatment length varies depending on symptom severity and goals.
Is it normal to feel anxious during ERP therapy?
Yes. Anxiety may increase during exposures at first, but it naturally decreases over time as your brain learns you can tolerate uncertainty without compulsions.
Is virtual ERP therapy effective?
Yes. Virtual ERP is as effective as in-person therapy and allows you to practice exposures in real-life environments like your home.
How long are ERP therapy sessions?
ERP sessions are typically 50–60 minutes, allowing time for exposures, skill practice, and progress review.
How often should ERP therapy sessions be scheduled?
Most clients start with weekly ERP sessions. Frequency may change based on progress and treatment needs.
Do I need an OCD diagnosis to start ERP therapy?
No. A formal diagnosis is not required. Your therapist can assess your symptoms and determine if ERP is appropriate.
