Assertiveness Training
A common variable for people who struggle with OCD (and some anxiety disorders) is indecisiveness and people-pleasing. They generally exhibit passive behaviors. Our ERP treatment often incorporates assertiveness training exposures as part of the treatment. This will help the client experience more confidence and will certainly increase their self-esteem. The ability to be assertive is so important in all relationships in life and is imperative when creating and maintaining boundaries. Those struggling with OCD specifically have a higher tendency to ‘settle’ whether that’s professionally or personally due to fears of change. This type of passivity can lead to significant regret. The client may avoid new job opportunities or promotions because their current job is known, even if it is miserable. They might settle even in romantic relationships because it’s easier and perceived as safer to stay with the person who is known. Over time, passive behaviors lead to a reduction of healthy risk taking. We all know that life is way too short to not take some healthy risks. We always have clients on our caseload who do not have OCD or an anxiety disorder but see us to learn how to become more assertive and develop boundaries.
